About Us

Legion Band at First Baptist Fort Lauderdale

The  American Legion Symphonic Band is sponsored by the American Legion 9th District, which comprises the entirety of Broward County, Florida.  With a membership of over 65 professional and amateur musicians who volunteer their time and talents, the band provides live music for enjoyment throughout the tri-county area of South Florida (Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade). The band currently rehearses at American Legion Post 222 in Oakland Park, FL every Wednesday night from mid-August through early July. The band presents 3 concerts annually at the St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Deerfield Beach, as well as performing for “Light Up Lauderdale” at Riverwalk, “Light Up The Beach” on Fort Lauderdale Beach, and a St. Patrick’s Day Celebration, all for the City of Fort Lauderdale. The band also presents a holiday concert for the Pompano Beach Chamber of Commerce and several other concerts yearly in conjunction with the Pompano Beach Parks, Recreation and Cultural Arts Dept. Patriotic performances each year include a 9/11 Memorial Concert, a Veteran’s Day Concert, a Memorial Day Concert, a Four Chaplains Memorial Service and a 4th of July Celebration.

The band was founded in January 2004 by Arthur Tenny, a veteran of Viet Nam and a member of American Legion Post 142 in Pompano Beach, FL.  Art and a number of other charter members had been associated for years with the bands of Dr. Robert M. Lacey, who, up until his death in 2004, had been serving the Deerfield and Pompano Beach communities with live community band music. The desire of Mr. Tenny, in forming this new organization, was to continue the tradition of live concert band music in the south Florida area, and at the same time, honor all of our veterans, as well as, those who are serving so nobly as members of our armed forces. The American Legion Symphonic Band is the only American Legion District sponsored community band in the State of Florida.
